Game Boy Screen Replacement

Tools: Tri-wing screwdriver, Phillips #00 screwdriver

Step 1: Make sure the device is turned off, that there are no games in it, and that the batteries have been taken out Take out the six screws shown. They could be either tri-point or Phillips screws so make sure you’re using an appropriate screwdriver

Step 2: Slowly separate the front and back halves of the device but do not disconnect or damage the ribbon cable between them

Step 3: Position the device as shown so you can see the socket that the cable is attached to, again making sure to not damage the cable

Step 4: Holding the ribbon between your thumb and index finger, pull slowly to remove the connector (not the ribbon) from the socket The two parts should now be cleanly separated

Step 5: Take out the ten screws (Phillips #00) shown

Step 6: Carefully take out the circuit board (plastic opening tool or credit card would be helpful) – when you do this the speaker will also come out

Step 7: See the three plastic hooks shown in the picture? Push them out and down

Step 8: On the other side of the board, find the two screws that connect the screen to the board and take them out

Step 9: Find the two parts shown in the pictures. These are the surface mount attachments

Step 10: Detach the surface mounts (need to desolder) and take the screen off the board

Step 11: Put the new screen on!

Step 12: Reattach (solder) the surface mounts Let the device cool momentarily before proceeding

Step 13: Put back in the two screws to connect the screen to the board
