Nintendo GameCube Optical Drive Assembly Replacement


Tools: Nintendo GameCube bit tool, Phillips #1 screwdriver, Phillips #2 screwdriver


Step 1: Take out the screws shown on the bottom of the console with a 4.5 mm Gamebit screwdriver



Step 2: Take off the top cover of the system



Step 3: With your fingers applying slight pressure on the parts shown, slowly remove the back panel



Step 4: Detach the clips as shown in the yellow boxes but do NOT remove the connection in the middle



Step 5: Take out the two screws shown on the back of the port you just unclipped Take out the green circuit board.



Step 6: Take out the two screws shown near the fan. Leave the wires in place



Step 7: Notice the four screws shown with the two springs between them. Take out the screws (Phillips #1) and then slowly take out the springs



Step 8: Take out the screws (Phillips #2) shown (12 total)



Step 9: Slowly remove the optical drive assembly (the black part and the metal plate that it’s attached to)



Step 10: Take out the six screws (Phillips #1) shown in the 2nd picture on the bottom of the optical drive assembly. Take off the metal plate without agitating the brown ribbon cable underneath



Step 11: Pull delicately on the blue wire to take it out. Take out the four screws (#1) shown in the 3rd picture



Step 12: Take out the green circuit board but do not detach the white ribbon cable or the red wire



Step 13: Around the sides of the assembly there are four flips. Find them and release the tension on them with a flathead screwdriver



Step 14: Remove the metal plate without damaging the red wire or white ribbon cable. Orient the drive to be right-side up. If you have to rotate the drive you need to rotate the attached circuit board with it to avoid twisting the red wire and white ribbon cable



Step 15: Release tension on the two clips shown in the first two pictures Remove the base of the drive, once again making sure not to damage the red wire or white ribbon cable



Step 16: Take out the three screws shown on the underside of the remaining portion of the drive You can now take out the lens assembly


REVERSE THE ABOVE STEPS TO PUT THE CONSOLE BACK TOGETHER
