How was GGRetroBox born?

GGRetroBox was born due to dissatisfaction with existing gaming subscription boxes. We were motivated to create something better after experiencing disappointment with the experience and quality of other retro game boxes.

What was creation like?

Creating GGRetroBox was all about figuring out what would excite us and our fellow retro game enthusiasts. We wanted to capture that awesome feeling of being a kid in the 80s, 90s, or 00s, tearing open a new game and feeling pure joy. It was a mix of personal passion and wanting to create an experience that would make every retro collector feel that same nostalgia.

What did you learn about yourself throughout this project?

I learned that I could push through things and solve problems with development even when they seemed impossible for me to solve at first.

What products influenced this one the most?

The primary influences for GGRetroBox stem from the boxed games of the 80s and 90s. During that era, with no internet, game covers played a significant role in what games someone bought. We aimed to replicate that sentiment by crafting memorable boxes that not only looked visually stunning but also housed amazing games in them, mirroring the allure of the classics.

Any fun stories or wild moments during development?

A wild part of development was trying to make sure that everything stays up to date and in sync without the need to manually update things. We had to make several regularly running automations for things such as sending shipment tracking notifications, adding games to a user's collection once their box is delivered, and syncing our main games database to our search database to provide a blazing fast search experience. This was a challenge because these things depend on real time data which can be hard to test and ensure the reliability of.

Do you think preserving older gameplay mechanics in new games is important.

Absolutely, preserving older gameplay mechanics in new games is crucial. They can provide a sense of nostalgia for long-time gamers and can offer unique and enjoyable challenges that may be different from modern gaming trends. Incorporating retro gameplay mechanics can bridge the gap between gamers from all generations.

What's your favorite memory as a gamer?

I don't have a specific favorite gaming memory but I think the most memorable times are when I am playing with friends and just having a fun time regardless of how good we actually are at the game.

Our next big venture is enhancing our free-to-use game collection tracking platform, currently in beta. We're looking to expand and refine it, with a keen focus on adding a vibrant community aspect. Users will soon be able to share their collections with others, fostering a sense of community among retro gaming enthusiasts. Additionally, we're cooking up plans for introducing achievements and exclusive rewards to celebrate those with truly impressive game collections. It's all about building a community and making the gaming experience even more rewarding!
